The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Tawadros II, arrived in Jerusalem on 25 November to lead the ceremonies for the funeral of Anba Abraham, the Coptic Archbishop for Jerusalem and the Middle East, who died the day before, aged 77.
The Coptic Church is the largest Christian church in the Middle East. It has 10-14 million adherents in Egypt and another 2 million worldwide. It was founded in the fist century AD by Saint Mark in Alexandria.
The Coptic Church stressed that Pope Tawadros was traveling for Jerusalem for Archbishop Abraham's funeral only and that the trip does not represent a lifting of the ban on travel to Jerusalem, which was proclaimed in 1980 by Tawadros' predecessor, Pope Shenouda III, as a protest against the unification of Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty.
Despite the ban, many Copts have made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem since then.
On 15 February 2015, militants claiming loyalty to ISIS abducted and murdered 21 Copts in Libya, in an act that repelled Egypt's Copts and Muslims alike.
