A new art installation in Taiwan aims to both entertain visitors and promote environmental awareness

A rather extravagant new art piece was installed outside of Taipei's City Hall, Taiwan, this week: a life-size car made from more than 20 000 mobile phones.
The artist, Taiwanese Lin Shih-Pao, travelled four years around the world, in order to collect old discarded mobile phones and assemble an entire automobile from them.
The design does not compromise the structure, as the arrangement of the mobile devices is supported by a wooden frame underneath. Even though visitors will not be able to take a ride on the car, they can enjoy its flamboyant design, which is meant to evoke consideration of the environmental impact of modern-day industries.
The artwork is a play on the contradiction represented by the world's obsession with mobile phones and its bad conscience about the waste caused by discarded phones.
